Nach dem Studium war er zunAchst Assistent am Institut fA1/4r Sozialmedizin in Hannover und anschlieAend leitender Stabsarzt der Abteilung Ergonomie am Schifffahrtmedizinischen Institut der Marine in Kiel. Mehrere tropenmedizinische Forschungsreisen haben den Ophthalmologen nach Kamerun, Liberia und Burkina Faso gefA1/4hrt. Heinz Mehlhorn ist Professor fA1/4r Parasitologie und Leiter des Instituts fA1/4r Zoomorphologie, Zellbiologie und Parasitologie an der Heinrich-Heine-UniversitAt DA1/4sseldorf. Von 1991 bis 1995 war er PrAsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft fA1/4r Parasitologie wie auch der Weltgesellschaft fA1/4r Protozoologie.
